(1) Construction / Investment

Palma: 10 million for renovations of sidewalks, pavements in the city center

Palma's city administration plans to spend nearly 10 million euros over the next two years renovating pavements and road surfaces in the city. That's 50% more than in the previous two years. Palma’s tourists and residents have been complaining for a long time about the condition of the pavements, which are in a poor state in parts causing people to trip.

Playa de Palma: Concrete riverbed Torrent dels Jueus is to be landscaped

The municipalities of Palma and Llucmajor share responsibility for the torrent Torrent dels Jueus in Arenal, which separates the two districts: Presently it is a concrete riverbed and in places used for dumping rubbish. Now both communities have decided to improve the area by creating artificial sand dunes, and planting reeds, shrubs and trees. The investment is estimated at 2.1 million euros and will be financed using the tourism tax.

Playa de Palma: Urbanization Bellavista finally legal. Now infrastructure will be created.

At the end of the 1950s the urbanisation Bellavista was illegally developed in the Playa de Palma. The urbanisation comprises some 450 houses and approx. 1,500 live there. It has no necessary infrastructure and most of the roads are uncared for and have dangerous potholes. Now the urbanisation has finally been recognised as such, and funds have been released for infrastructure measures. The initial project is the repair of roads at a cost of €12.5 million.

Pla de Sant Jordi: funding program for the restoration of historic watermills

Mallorca is also the island of mills - 3,300 still remain although many of them are in a terrible state. In Pla de Sant Jordi, the area around the airport, there are more than a thousand of these water mills. The island council has launched a funding program for the restoration of these mills. The state will bear 100% of the costs, but the owner has to take care of the restoration himself and later grant access to those interested in visiting by appointment. A total of 1.35 million euros is being provided by the island council and the Balearic Government for the restoration of Mallorca's mills.

Ariany: Manor house Can Rigo is to be converted into a 4-star hotel

The small village of Ariany (850 inhabitants) will shortly have a 4-star hotel. A group of investors want to convert the farmhouse Can Rigo into a 4-star hotel. The hotel will have 25 rooms, a restaurant and a SPA area and the opening is planned for 2019. Can Rigo was built at the end of the 19th century and is a listed building. The building near the market square has a varied history and was used, among other things, as a wine cellar, but also as a school.

Es Trenc: € 800,000 investment in the new nature reserve Es Trenc

Since June 2017 Mallorca's most popular beach Es Trenc has been declared a nature reserve. The Balearic Government will take this into account by investing € 800,000 in the years 2018 and 2019. The most important item in the budget is the construction of a bird observatory, with which the development of the bird population will be documented. Further investments are to be made in the preservation and protection of the dunes.

(2) Economy

Tourism I: Balance of the Balearic Islands for January to September 2017

The Spanish Institute of Statistics - INE - has published the latest tourism figures for the period January to September 2017 which indicate that 12.2 million foreign tourists visited the Balearic Islands during that time. This is 6.6% more than in the same period of the previous year. This indicates that the Balearic Islands were the most popular holiday destination for foreign tourists in Spain. 33.4% of the guests came from Germany, 30% from Great Britain.

Tourism II: Tourism Minister Biel Barcelo mistakenly blows his own trumpet

Tourism Minister Biel Barcelo proudly announces that since 2013, 85% of Mallorca's hotels have been modernised, not only improving quality, but also reducing electricity and water consumption by using sustainable energy sources. NOTE: Barcelo should stop blowing his own trumpet. The wave of modernisation he talks about was triggered by laws initiated by Barcelo's predecessor Carlos Delgado and enforced against the opposition of today's governing parties. After taking office, Barcelo has done everything possible to stop the wave of modernisation. A little more of the truth would be appropriate, Minister.

Tourismus III: Germania takes over vacant slots in Berlin’s Tegel airport

The airline Germania will take over slots made available in Berlin’s Tegel airport due to the bankruptcy of Air Berlin and in summer 2018 will fly daily from Tegel to Mallorca. As of May 2018, Germania will fly to Tegel from 13 destinations - Algarve, Funchal on Madeira, Marsa Alam in Egypt and various Greek islands. After three years absence, Germania will once again have its own base at Tegel airport.

(3) Law, taxes, and finances

The polo field Sa Barralina close to Ses Covetes in Campos is organising its legalisation

For 15 years, polo tournaments have been held on the site of Sa Barralina close to Ses Covetes in Campos. Originally, the project was supported by the community, whereas environmentalists were up in arms and blocked the approval process again and again. The owner company is now pursuing a legalisation procedure under the so-called Lex Company, a law of the previous conservative government, according to which illegally constructed buildings in rural areas can subsequently be legalised by paying a penalty. In Campos town hall, the project (polo field and stables) is now open for public inspection for 30 days - part of the legalisation process.

Balearic Islands have to pay 105 million euros in damages to property owners in Camp de Mar.

The Administrative Court in Palma has ordered the Balearic Government to pay compensation of 40 million euros to a landowner in the Biniorella urbanisation in Camp de Mar. This makes it the fourth-time compensation has had to be paid. To date the court has so far confirmed a total compensation of 75 million euros. However, adding interest increases the final amount to be paid to 105 million euros! It is still possible to appeal against the judgment. The history of this decision is as follows: in 2008 the then left-wing government, under Prime Minister Antich, legally and unconstitutionally rezoned 98,000 m² of land belonging to the owner concerned, development of which had already began, to "suelo rustico", with the result that the owner suffered a significant economic loss.

Obviously, the current left-wing government has learned nothing from the mistakes of the Antich government. At present, e.g. Calvia town hall has produced a new general plan for Calvia as well as a special plan for the urbanisation Son Font, which involves significant legal, even constitutional, violations and which will trigger claims for damages in the millions. The fact that she is igniting a tinder box seems not to be any concern to Calvia’s left government despite more than 100 objections. The damage will not be paid by the lawbreakers of the community, but the citizens. The current government is only 16 months in office but that is still sufficient time to cause even more havoc.

The Lightness of the Stone "- The Sculptor Norbert Jäger

Egyptians, Greeks and Romans brought sculpture to great heights by sculpting gods and heroes from huge blocks of basalt, granite, and marble that would last for eternity. Armed with the knowledge of their sculptor colleagues of thousands of years earlier, the avant-garde sculptors of the twentieth century developed "free works". The sculptor not only left his mark, but became a passionate designer who, in his struggle with the material, gave his ideas free rein. One of the masters of his subject is the sculptor Norbert Jäger, who will be exhibiting his new works at the Galeria de Arte Minkner in Santa Ponsa until the end of October 2017.

Norbert Jäger completed an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor in Frankfurt and received several awards immediately after completing his training, including the Federal Prize for Sculptors. Consequently, Master's seminars, scholarships and periods of study in the USA, Australia and Greece, as well as individual and group exhibitions in Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Korea, Turkey, USA, followed by lectures of symposia public institutions, companies and private collections at home and abroad were to follow.

With a hammer, chisel and angle grinder, Norbert Jäger tackles the stone blocks some of which are up to 3.50 metres high and several tons in weight. His favourite material is marble, as "it has the most interior life and character", but also the "Santanyi" stone of Mallorca yields to his will, his imagination, his creativity and his creative interpretation. Norbert Jäger creates sculptures with a high respect for the stone in dramatic proportions, breathtaking beauty, simple elegance and gives the viewer "the lightness of the stone"

HERMAN - "Gans schön sonnig" - new works by the popular pop artist
The artist HERMAN, one of the most important German pop artists, will be exhibiting his latest works from 1st  September 2017 ( A unique and limited editions) at Minkner & Partner in Llucmajor. Especially Hermans word - Painting games always enchant the viewers and of the pictures,  that let them smile or reach them them deeply into the heart. Particularly attractive this time is the interplay of former Herman works (from the year 2002 and owned by the Galeria de Arte Minkner) with the currently "fresh" from his studio.

You can see the almost incredible development of the artist and the perseverance of the original Herman style. He himself has hardly changed (he says): a funny-spontaneous entertainer with a huge portion of self-irony.

A special highlight at Minkner & Partner is Llucmajor Herman's
