Foreign buyers bought 3,463 properties in the Balearic Islands in the first half of 2017

The Balearics continue to be an "object of desire" for foreign homebuyers. According to recently published data from a survey by the Spanish Chamber of Notaries, foreign investors bought 3,463 properties in the Balearic Islands in the first half of 2017. This is 5.3% more than in the same period of the previous year and also the greatest amount since 2007 - just before the start of the real estate crisis. Most of the foreign buyers (40%) came from Germany, 16% from Great Britain.

MES per Mallorca - a reservoir of left-wing nutcases

During the last elections held in the Balearic Islands in 2015, the left-wing eco-party "MES per Mallorca" met with great sympathy, as was reflected in the election results: in Mallorca, 17.15% of voters voted MES, and 13.8% throughout the Balearic Islands. Its chairman, Biel Barcelo, became Tourism Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of the Left Alliance. Since then, the party has been overtaken by political life: Several party officials are under investigation for corruption and nepotism. Barcelo’s position is also unstable. Other than that, it seems that MES’s programme is aimed at wanting to distinguish themselves by issuing more and more mischievous messages. In the summer of 2017, instead of searching for solutions for the excess tourism, MES wanted to introduce a limit on the number of tourists. To follow was the blow in connection with the independence efforts in Catalonia: In addition to sending solidarity addresses to the volatile constitutional Puigdemont, MES spokesman David Abril also called for the separation of the Balearic Islands from Spain (in the meantime, Biel Barcelo has back pedalled up to now). Also with the change of the tourism law on the topic of the vacation rental Biel Barcelo has not had an all-out success – there is more ambiguity than clarification. There are also judicial disputes within the party. And finally, this week, the king - widely recognized as a prime advertising factor for the Balearic Islands - was attacked with the proposal to accommodate students at Mallorca's Marivent Palace, the residence of the Spanish royal family. The proposal is now with the Balearic Government for a decision. Let's see what the comrades have to say.

(2) Economy

Tourism I: Palma is expecting the highest number of visitors of all time in the month of December 2017

The tourism industry and the political leaders have been working for many years to "balance out the seasons" and make Mallorca interesting for tourists even in winter. This work seems to be beginning to bear fruit. Especially in Palma, hotel owners as well as restaurants and retailers, expect unprecedented sales figures in the month of December 2017. The increase in the number of visitors has affected the industries involved: more hotels than usual are open in December and the airlines have also prepared for short-stay travelers. Mallorca's Son Sant Joan Airport expects to dispatch 800,000 passengers, which is 10% more than in December 2016.

Tourism II: Takeover from NIKI that influences Mallorquin flights

The takeover of NIKI by Lufthansa is not yet in the bag due to the antitrust review. The examination period was initially extended until 21 December 2017. However, it is possible that the monopolies and mergers commission needs a further extension of 90 days for an in-depth review. However, this could mean that NIKI would have to declare bankruptcy. As a gesture of goodwill Lufthansa has already announced that it could hand over some slots to the competition in order to dispel the concerns of the monopolies and mergers commission.

Tourism III: The Balearic Government is confronting the cruise liners regarding the Ecotasa

The Balearic Government plans to levy an Ecotasa (tourist tax) on cruise passengers regardless of how long they stay in Mallorca. Up until now the tax is € 2 per day if the stay is longer than two hours. In most European countries, a similar tax is only be collected if the guest stays overnight. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which is made up of 45 shipping companies, has protested to the Balearic government against these plans and threaten to stop calling into the Balearic Islands if the tax is levied.

(3) Law, taxes, and finances

The Island council has decided on a “path law” and legal procedures of expropriation are to be expected

The Balearic Islands Council has drafted a new law on pathways, which will be submitted to the Balearic Parliament for approval. The basic idea of the law, which is to document and publish the public network of paths and to make them accessible, has been well accepted. However, since ownership of many of the paths is highly controversial, should the bill be passed, many years of litigation are inevitable as it provides for the expropriation of private property owners if they do not wish to voluntarily make their land available to the public. Island Council President Ensenyat underlines the authors' communist train of thought: "They (the land, the paths) are public property, we want everyone to be able to use them”.

The Lightness of the Stone "- The Sculptor Norbert Jäger

Egyptians, Greeks and Romans brought sculpture to great heights by sculpting gods and heroes from huge blocks of basalt, granite, and marble that would last for eternity. Armed with the knowledge of their sculptor colleagues of thousands of years earlier, the avant-garde sculptors of the twentieth century developed "free works". The sculptor not only left his mark, but became a passionate designer who, in his struggle with the material, gave his ideas free rein. One of the masters of his subject is the sculptor Norbert Jäger, who will be exhibiting his new works at the Galeria de Arte Minkner in Santa Ponsa until the end of October 2017.

Norbert Jäger completed an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor in Frankfurt and received several awards immediately after completing his training, including the Federal Prize for Sculptors. Consequently, Master's seminars, scholarships and periods of study in the USA, Australia and Greece, as well as individual and group exhibitions in Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Korea, Turkey, USA, followed by lectures of symposia public institutions, companies and private collections at home and abroad were to follow.

With a hammer, chisel and angle grinder, Norbert Jäger tackles the stone blocks some of which are up to 3.50 metres high and several tons in weight. His favourite material is marble, as "it has the most interior life and character", but also the "Santanyi" stone of Mallorca yields to his will, his imagination, his creativity and his creative interpretation. Norbert Jäger creates sculptures with a high respect for the stone in dramatic proportions, breathtaking beauty, simple elegance and gives the viewer "the lightness of the stone"

HERMAN - "Gans schön sonnig" - new works by the popular pop artist
The artist HERMAN, one of the most important German pop artists, will be exhibiting his latest works from 1st  September 2017 ( A unique and limited editions) at Minkner & Partner in Llucmajor. Especially Hermans word - Painting games always enchant the viewers and of the pictures,  that let them smile or reach them them deeply into the heart. Particularly attractive this time is the interplay of former Herman works (from the year 2002 and owned by the Galeria de Arte Minkner) with the currently "fresh" from his studio.

You can see the almost incredible development of the artist and the perseverance of the original Herman style. He himself has hardly changed (he says): a funny-spontaneous entertainer with a huge portion of self-irony.

A special highlight at Minkner & Partner is Llucmajor Herman's
KissingBooth the most affectionate Selfiepoint on Mallorca.
