(1) Construction / Investment
Palma: A new project envisages connecting the district of El Terreno with the Paseo Marítimo by means of escalators and elevators
Palma's city council has presented an interesting project: The district of El Terreno is to be connected to the Paseo Marítimo by means of an escalator and lifts, so as to create easier access to the sea. The path is to lead from the Placa Remigia Caubet above Sa Quarentena park down to the Paseo Marítimo. The architects Joan Fortuny and Xavier Andreu have won a tender. Construction work is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2018. The costs are estimated at € 490,000. Deia: "Deia Petit" - dispute over project with 21 single-family homes
The company Mar Capital is currently building a small residence in Deia with 21 detached houses "Deia Petit". The houses which vary in size, have natural stone facades, and blend in with landscape are due to be completed in 2019. The mayor explains that the residence complies with the building regulations and the aesthetic requirements of the community. However, its approval has been met with opposition from the Agrupació Deia party who “will take a close look at the project and if they find anything to stop the project, they will do it". This is going to be fun. That’s the way to alienate investors who have basically done everything right.
Ses Covetes: A tug of war regarding the polo field Sa Barralina
For 15 years polo tournaments have taken place on the site of Sa Barralina in Ses Covetes. The local authorities were in favour of the project to construct a polo field. The Green parties, however, have always been against such a thing and have evidently found sympathisers in the current left-wing government. Due to a lack of relevant licenses, the place was closed down. M & P - newsletter reported recently that the operating company had resubmitted the missing applications a few weeks ago. The basis for a possible subsequent approval is a law implemented by the previous conservative government, which allows the subsequent legalisation as part of an amnesty, if a fine is paid. The current closure has now become somewhat of a tug of war! Palma - Son Busquets: 831 apartments are to be built on a former military site
M & P newsletter has often reported on the problems of those living in Palma being able to find affordable housing in the capital. We have repeatedly called for new ideas from politicians to tackle this problem (new construction of social housing, promotion of housing construction for young families, reduction of land acquisition and value added tax, that increases housing and home purchase by up to 13 % more expensive, etc.). A project in social housing is now being pushed: The former military site, Son Busquets, will be reclassified so that social housing, comprising a total of 871 apartments, can be built there. Half of the funds will come from the public sector; the other half will come from private investors. In the complex, a quarter of which will be landscaped, there will also be shops to cater for residents’ needs. (2) Economy
Tourism I: Palma airport handled 2.9 million passengers in October
Once again in October Palma’s Son Sant Joan airport was able to report record figures. In October 2017, the airport handled almost 2.9 million passengers. That's 3.78 % more than last year. The number of flights (21,208) was 4.3 % higher than in the same month of the previous year. The 1,169,010 passengers came mainly from Germany; 585,583 were from the UK.
Tourism II: Palma's airport scores with new VIP lounge
Palma's Son Sant Joan Airport now has a new and improved VIP lounge in Terminal C departures. It has been upgraded at a cost of 2.5 million euros and is open daily from 6.00 am to 11.00 pm. 60 guests can be catered for in the VIP lounge. The entrance fee is € 28.70. The airport operator AENA announces that in October 2017 alone Palma handled 2.9 million passengers, which is why the demand for high quality rest areas with good catering has arisen.
Tourism III: In the winter season Palma’s airport expects an increase that will move into double figures
After an overwhelming summer season, Palma's Son Sant Joan Airport is also forecasting high growth for the winter season, which they expect will reach double figures. Palma has non-stop connections to 140 European cities during the off-season from November to March. 24 destinations are in the programme for the first time. There are 6.2 million seats available, which is 18.5 % (!) more than in the same period last year. (3) Law, taxes, and finances

The Lightness of the Stone "- The Sculptor Norbert Jäger
Egyptians, Greeks and Romans brought sculpture to great heights by sculpting gods and heroes from huge blocks of basalt, granite, and marble that would last for eternity. Armed with the knowledge of their sculptor colleagues of thousands of years earlier, the avant-garde sculptors of the twentieth century developed "free works". The sculptor not only left his mark, but became a passionate designer who, in his struggle with the material, gave his ideas free rein. One of the masters of his subject is the sculptor Norbert Jäger, who will be exhibiting his new works at the Galeria de Arte Minkner in Santa Ponsa until the end of October 2017.
Norbert Jäger completed an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor in Frankfurt and received several awards immediately after completing his training, including the Federal Prize for Sculptors. Consequently, Master's seminars, scholarships and periods of study in the USA, Australia and Greece, as well as individual and group exhibitions in Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Korea, Turkey, USA, followed by lectures of symposia public institutions, companies and private collections at home and abroad were to follow.
With a hammer, chisel and angle grinder, Norbert Jäger tackles the stone blocks some of which are up to 3.50 metres high and several tons in weight. His favourite material is marble, as "it has the most interior life and character", but also the "Santanyi" stone of Mallorca yields to his will, his imagination, his creativity and his creative interpretation. Norbert Jäger creates sculptures with a high respect for the stone in dramatic proportions, breathtaking beauty, simple elegance and gives the viewer "the lightness of the stone" Galeria de Arte Minkner - Avda. HERMAN - "Gans schön sonnig" - new works by the popular pop
artist You can see the almost incredible development of the artist and the perseverance of the original Herman style. He himself has hardly changed (he says): a funny-spontaneous entertainer with a huge portion of self-irony.
